Welcome to ENG 316. In this course we will, through the examination of published stories and student pieces alike, become adept readers — able to evaluate a story’s success or failure alongside a handful of objective criteria, which we will investigate in class — and proficient writers of short fiction. Together, we will strive to create an environment wherein each writer is encouraged and inspired to risk and stretch, purposing to provide one another feedback that is, at all times, considered, constructive and kindly conveyed. By the end of the term, we will have learned how to manipulate in our own work the elements we recognize in others’, moving, ultimately, to the development of conceptually and technically sophisticated stories.
