As the introductory experience for the core curriculum at William Jewell College, this course will explore the theme, "The Responsible Self." Students will wrestle with what it means to be a “self” (an individual) from the perspectives of several worldviews as these are represented in thought-provoking texts. In each case responsibility will be examined in light of a culture's understanding of the relationship between the individual and community. The learning experience will introduce students not only to important ideas about the individual and community as represented by modern western individualism, an eastern religion, a significant indigenous people's tradition, and classic Christianity, but also to critical thinking skills that are crucial for responsible citizenship and leadership.
