Physiology is the study of the mechanisms by which living organisms function. The goal of this course is to familiarize you with a broad scope of topics including the function of individual molecules (i.e. how a particular protein functions to allow for potassium ions to leave the cell) to the interrelationship of several organ systems in the regulation of homeostasis.  The knowledge gained in this course will allow for a better understanding of the function of the entire human body. The following organ systems will be discussed:  Endocrine, Nervous, Muscular, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Urinary, Digestive, and Reproductive. The laboratory portion of this course is designed to supplement and reinforce the material introduced in lecture.  A variety of teaching methods will be used throughout this course, including interactive discussions, didactic lecture, case studies, and laboratory experiments.  After the completion of this course you should understand:

(1)   Your professional area to a greater degree.

(2)   The extensive terminology used in the field of physiology.

(3)   Homeostasis and the mechanisms involved in maintaining the intracellular and extracellular environment of the human body.

(4)   Integrative functions and organ systems.

(5)   Be able to orally converse about physiological topics.

(6)   Pathophysiological events in disease and rationale for appropriate treatment.
