• The principal goal of this course is to provide the student with the opportunity to improve her/his oral and written communication skills by:

    *Improving writing ability through the process of prewriting (brainstorming ideas beforehand), outlining and composing drafts which in turn will be used to focus on the acts of peer reviewing, proofreading, editing, revising, and feedback-crucial in the successful writing process. 

    * Sharpening listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and improving oral proficiency through participation in class discussions and debates. 

    *Participation means voluntary participation in all areas of class work (grammar exercises, discussion of movies or literature, etc.). If the teacher has to call on you to hear your voice, then you are not complying with the rules of class participation. Please note the importance of this item: if you are in class every day, but do not participate actively in class work, this will not help your participation grade.  In this class, your voice needs to be heard. 

    *Exposing students to new vocabulary.

    *Practicing narration, exposition, and argumentation.

    * Applying grammar rules learned in previous courses.

  • This is an introductory course in Spanish with the focus on communication using all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  This course covers the same material as SPA 111 and 112 at an accelerated pace for students who have had two or more years of Spanish in high school, but whose placement test scores indicate that they are not fully prepared to enter SPA 211.  Our immediate and ultimate goal is communication in Spanish, which is emphasized in all of our classroom and homework activities. The principal goal of this course is to provide the student with the opportunity to improve her/his oral and written communication skills in Spanish, and to apply all of the grammar rules learned in previous courses as well as developing a sound base in grammatical concepts to pave the way for further study of Spanish.

  • The purpose of SPA 211 is to improve linguistic skills such as pronunciation,   intonation, grammar, and vocabulary in a variety of discourse, including stories, poems, songs, letters, dialogues and informational readings.

    During the course we will promote proficiency in communication by providing ample opportunity to develop the four language skills of listening,  speaking, reading and writing, and especially to be able to use past, present and future constructions effectively. Student  able to manipulate the subjunctive mood.

    The course will expose students to the reality Spanish-speaking world, including Latinos in the United States, through experiential applications and service to the community

  • Spanish 320A is for students who plan on majoring or minoring in Spanish, Spanish education, International Business and/or International Relations. This survey course will present a chronological study of literary material within a frame of socio-historical context, both Peninsular and Spanish-American, since their origins to the end of nineteen century. It is designed to prepare the students for more specialized work in major level courses. Readings will be drawn from Medieval poetry, Reinassance, Pre-Columbian Indigenous Culture (Maya, Azteca, Inca), Colon First Diaries, Chronicles, Narratives of the Conquest, and 20th century literary works.

    This course ties together a good verbal command of the language -for discussions, understanding and expression of critical opinions- with a good amount of reading and writing.
